You can't use AWS without making an account. In this video, we’ll walk through how to make one, and verify that you can sign in.
New Terms:
- Amazon Account — Used for shopping on Amazon.com.
- AWS Account — Used for managing cloud services on AWS. You need an Amazon Account before you can get an AWS Account.
Your Amazon Account and your AWS Account share the same email and password, but nothing else.

You know what AWS is and why it's useful,
are you ready to give it a try?
0:04
You'll need an account with AWS
before you can do anything with it.
0:09
So in this video, we'll walk through the
process of signing up for an AWS account.
0:12
Don't worry, signing up with AWS is free.
0:16
In fact, throughout this whole course I'll
warn you anytime I ask you to do something
0:19
with AWS that might cost money,
even if it's only a tenth of a cent.
0:23
>> Here's the AWS homepage,
at aws.amazon.com.
0:26
You're probably already familiar with
amazon.com, the shopping website.
0:31
AWS is just run by the same company, so
it's a different part of the same company.
0:36
In order to use AWS, you'll need both
an Amazon account and an AWS account.
0:41
So what's the difference?
0:46
You use an Amazon account
to shop at Amazon.com and
0:47
you use an AWS to manage AWS
services like S3 and EC2.
0:51
They're entirely different accounts that
are used for entirely different purposes.
0:55
Except for one thing.
0:59
Your Amazon account and your AWS account
share the same login information.
1:00
The email and password you use for
one will be the same email and
1:05
password you use for the other.
1:08
Even though they're two
different accounts,
1:10
you only need to remember one password.
1:12
That means that even if you already have
an Amazon account for shopping online,
1:14
you still need to create a new
AWS account for using AWS.
1:17
So let's do that.
1:22
I'm gonna start by clicking on the button
marked Create a Free Account in the top
1:23
right corner of the page.
1:27
The AWS website changes every now and
then, so by the time you watch this video,
1:29
it might look a bit different
from what you're seeing here.
1:32
But it should still be pretty easy to
find the button to create an account.
1:35
All right, here is the sign in page.
1:45
In order to make an AWS account, you
already need to have an Amazon account.
1:48
So that's why AWS is
asking you to sign in.
1:51
Remember that your Amazon account and your
AWS account will use the same email and
1:54
password which makes it
easier to keep track of.
1:58
If you don't already have an Amazon
account you'll need to create one
2:02
like this.
2:05
You just put in your name and
email address and pick out a password for
2:10
yourself.
2:12
Remember, if you already have an Amazon
account you don't need to create a new
2:14
one like I'm doing.
2:17
You can just log in.
2:18
Once you've created a new Amazon account
or logged into your existing Amazon
2:21
account, you'll start the process
of making your AWS account.
2:25
This process has five steps,
contact information, payment information,
2:28
identity verification,
support plan and confirmation.
2:34
We're on the first step,
Contact Information.
2:38
First, indicate whether this is
a company account or a personal account.
2:41
If you're not sure,
click on Personal Account.
2:46
Then, put in your name,
address and phone number.
2:48
Be sure to use a real phone number since
AWS will be checking that in a later step.
2:54
You also have to do one of those very
annoying security checks to get passed
2:59
this page.
3:02
If you get a picture that you can't read,
3:03
click on the reload button
to get a different one.
3:05
Type the letters you see and
3:09
check the box to say that you agree
to the AWS Customer Agreement.
3:11
Then click the create account and
continue button.
3:14
And we move on to step two,
Payment Information.
3:16
At this point you need to put in
a credit card or a debit card so
3:19
that AWS can charge you if you
do anything that costs money.
3:22
Unfortunately, there is
no way to skip this step.
3:26
Even if you are planning
to do AWS on a free tier,
3:28
AWS still requires you to
have a payment card set up.
3:31
And for reference, don't bother
trying to put in a fake credit card.
3:34
As soon as you finish all five steps and
3:38
create your AWS account, AWS will test
your credit card to see if it works.
3:39
And if it doesn't, they'll
immediately shut down your account.
3:44
So grab a credit card or
debit card and enter the information.
3:47
For the billing address, you can either
select the address you just typed in, or
3:50
you can put in a new address.
3:54
I'll just use the same address
as I typed before and move on.
3:57
The third step is Identity Verification.
4:00
For this step,
AWS will call your phone number and
4:03
ask you to type a pin
number into your phone.
4:05
This is to verify that you're
a real person with a working phone.
4:08
It's actually a pretty cool process.
4:11
First, you'll need to type in
the characters for the security check and
4:13
double check that you typed
in your phone correctly,
4:16
then click the Call Me Now button.
4:19
All right, there's the pin number we need.
4:22
Now we just wait a few seconds.
4:24
>> Hello.
4:26
This is an automated call
from Amazon web services.
4:27
>> Hey, it's AWS.
4:30
When they tell me to,
I'll type in the PIN number.
4:32
>> Using the touch pad on your phone,
4:35
please enter the four digit PIN number
that was displayed on your screen.
4:37
You may also say your
PIN one digit at a time.
4:41
[SOUND] We have successfully
verified your PIN.
4:44
Please return to Amazon Web Services
to complete your registration.
4:49
Thank you for
your interest in Amazon Web Services.
4:53
Good-bye.
4:56
>> As soon as I typed the number into
my phone, the website detected it and
4:57
told me that the verification
was successful.
5:01
Pretty slick.
5:03
On to the next step.
5:04
The fourth step is just picking
a support plan, this one's easy.
5:06
Since you're just getting started,
pick the basic option which is free.
5:09
Everything else costs money and
you don't need a support plan right now.
5:13
Scroll down to the bottom and click on
the Continue button and you're all set.
5:16
The fifth step is optional.
5:21
You can stroll down
the confirmation page and
5:22
tell Amazon what you plan to use AWS for
so that they can recommend things for you.
5:24
But you'll probably want to click on the
button that says sign in to the console to
5:29
explore AWS yourself.
5:32
This is the AWS management console.
5:34
It's where you get started with
all the power that AWS provides.
5:37
In the next video we'll
start actually using S3.
