Let's look at three of them.
0:00
The first and most common way to
look at the middle of a data set
0:01
is to use the mean,
also known as the average.
0:04
To find the average of a set,
add up all the values and
0:07
then divide by how many values there are.
0:11
One problem with averages is that
they're easily influenced by outliers.
0:13
If we're looking at these
eight bowling scores,
0:18
the average is higher than every value but
the highest.
0:20
In this case, instead of using
the average to find the middle,
0:24
it might be better to use the median.
