Recently, Mark landed himself a junior front end developer position at Huemor Designs. In his new role, Mark is applying his skills daily to a career he truly enjoys. What first drew you to the web industry?
I have always had a fascination with the creative and technical aspects of computer related industries. From learning 3D animation in high school to some graphic design courses in college, to working as a technician for several years at big name companies. My path always seemed to weigh towards one or the other, but I finally became interested in web development/design. The best of both worlds.
Somewhere where I could be creative, and use problem-solving technical skills to achieve my goals.
What work were you doing when you first joined Treehouse & what encouraged you to learn with us?
I was working as a technician at an Apple retail store. While reading through tech news I ran across an article that said Treehouse was awarding scholarships to college students. So, I decided to apply and expand my skill set in an industry that I was not fully aware of at the time.
You recently landed a junior front end developer position. Tell us a little bit about how your career has evolved since learning with Treehouse and the experience of landing your first front end developer position.
Well, my career has officially begun, and it is largely because of the skills I have acquired through Treehouse. My first few months as a front end dev at Huemor Designs have been filled with a lot of learning. One of the most important skills you have will be learning. I have actually rejoined Treehouse to keep my skills sharp.
What has the value of a Treehouse education meant to you?
It is really hard to put a value on something that has enabled me to break out into an industry I truly enjoy. The teachers are all phenomenal and the video quality is top notch. If anyone is considering a career in the web I highly recommend Treehouse. A lot of my job ready skills were learned on Treehouse.
What are your plans for the future, and whatβs up next on your learning path?
My plans for the future are to become a really solid front end developer. The shop Iβm currently working at continues to challenge me every day. With fun, challenging, and creative products. I will continue to hone my skills and try to make cool new things.
Is there any advice youβd like to share with new students who are aspiring
web developers and designers?
College will prepare you for the amount of learning that will be required, and, of course, the basics in the industry. However, things like responsive design, Content management systems, and other web skills will likely not be discussed in most classrooms.
Before I landed my position I researched what skills were in high demand. Find those skills and learn them to the best of your ability. You should never stop learning.
