i jus cant figure this out and its frustrating

I believe that

public $species;

Is what you're looking for.

So you should have:

class Trout extends Fish {
  function __construct($name, $flavor, $record){
        $this->common_name = $name;
        $this->flavor = $flavor;
        $this->record_weight = $record;
  }
  public $species;

Where is the Fish class?
