Adobe Illustrator: Color of area outside artboard(s)

I have older CS5.5 and currently the color of the area outside my artboards is white. I'm following Ashley's videos on creating a wireframe and I like the gray she has as she works with her artboards. Is there a way to change that color in CS5.5(suite) from white to gray? User interface preferences makes it darker but it doesn't persist while working on the artboards. Thanks for any help.
