Any Tips on Designing a Better Looking UI?

Hi guys!

So recently I have been meaning to make my portfolio so I can, hopefully, start doing some freelance web development for clients. I feel I possess the skills needed to create my portfolio and to be able to create sites for others but every time I create my portfolio site the interface just doesn't look how I would like it to.

It is mainly to do with colour more than anything; the ones chosen by me never seem to fit well together. I have tried looking online at some colour palettes but didn't know if this was the best route to take so I avoided them.

What do you do to ensure that your site has a` good looking UI? Also, what do you take into consideration when selecting things like colour?

Thank you ever so much to anyone who replies. I hope you are all having great days.

There is a great tool called Adobe-Kuler (http://kuler.adobe.com) for creating a harmonic color-set if you struggle with our owns. Before designing the UI think about your UX and do some wireframes. Do you know dribbble.com? You might get some inspiration there.

Thanks for the link, I will take a look on the site.

Alright, thank you for the tip. I shall take a look into UX and see what it entails. I do indeed know dribbble.

Thank you for the help David.
