Anybody notice that working with people is the best way to get leads?

It's kinda funny, I was simply mentioning that I build websites to a customer at work, and behold, he owned a custom car shop and was looking to make a website. Nothing too serious, just a portfolio type site with business information and such with a bunch of pictures of his work.

I know it sounds silly, and I wasn't even looking for to build something for someone. Im not exactly looking to build my own business or anything, I want to learn a bunch, build a protfolio, and get a job at a firm somewhere to build experience (not that I wouldn't take up side projects if I was able). It just fell into my lap. I'll be contacting him soon to establish specifics.

Anybody have similar experiences? Have you noticed just taking interest in people and what they do leads to getting work?

Oh, yes. People just start popping out of the woodwork when you develop a skill. I was learning to draw a few years ago, and as soon as I mentioned it, a friend asked me to draw out a tattoo for them. This drawing was going to be on someone's skin and I was still trying to get circles right!
