At one time, the benefit was reliable broswer compatibility when not all browsers recognized the bracket syntax.

Now, they mostly do the same thing except when given unconventional arguments. For example:

'abc'[true]        // undefined
'abc'.charAt(true) // 'b'
'abc'[3]           // undefined
'abc'.charAt(3)    // ''
