As a Front-End Dev, are you responsible for the JUST the build, or are you also responsible for the design?

I have a question regrading front-end development - The reason I got into coding was because I like creating functionality. I like bringing someone else's awesome design to life. However, as much as I can appreciate and understand what makes a good design, I don't particularly like designing, myself. Quite honestly, I get anxious about my designs and I'm prone to perfection paralysis. Whereas, when I have a design in front of me, I'm so happy. I love the build.

As a front-end developer, am I required to design?

I think this very much depends on the company. At a small company that doesn't spend a lot of resources on its website, the role may be combined, but at a larger company, they'll certainly have designers and developers performing separate roles. Most front end development positions I see advertised seem more concerned with the development side, listing the languages/technologies/frameworks you need to be familiar with, but the best thing to do would be to check positions in your area and see what's required.

I agree with Stuart Wright on this. According to what I know (this includes things I've read and discussions with other developers) it will depend very much on the company. I can also confirm that most places I see looking for front-end developers are concerned mostly with what you know. I'd keep an eye out for any company that is looking for a front-end developer and a UI/UX expert. Likely as not, it means that they have a position or team specifically for design which would mean that their front-end developer role should be primarily about development and little about design.
