Is it necessary to use the alt key to delete a bezier handle... i was able to accomplish deleting a handle just by clicking the anchor with the pen tool (p).
Whats the difference between clicking the anchor point with pen tool and holding alt + clk with pen tool?

My understanding was that when the Pen tool is selected, the alt key will allow you to use the convert point tool. Clicking on an anchor point with the Pen tool should just delete it, as you said.
Is there a video somewhere on Treehouse that says otherwise?
