CSS Bootstrap Basics Getting to Know Bootstrap Enhancing the Page

Bootstrap vs CSS

Maybe it sounds like a silly question, but: Is Bootstrap a substitute for CSS?

Thanks!

No, but since most of Bootstrap is CSS, so as long as you want only things that Bootstrap is intended to do, you might not need to write much (if any) CSS yourself.

I can definitely see some of the advantages of bootstrap and when to employ it, but also can understand the limitations and when it would be best to try to create something unique/different. Thanks for the reply Steven... after completing the course and asking the question out loud really helped to conceptualise bootstrap vs CSS better. Cheers!

Just wanted to say how nice it is to see how friendly, kind and understanding people are towards each other in the questions section of Treehouse.

This is glorious! Thanks Steven!

Just adding to the question of bootstrap vs CSS:

When is it best to use bootstrap as oppose to CSS to front-end your site? Or, on what occasions is it better to employ bootstrap over CSS?

Bootstrap has a particular "look" that because of it's popularity is familiar to most users, and it also provides responsiveness to various devices. If you like that look, using Bootstrap can greatly simplify and speed up the development process.

On the other hand, if you're objective is to create a distinctive look, and you know how to achieve responsive functionality without using a framework, you might choose to "roll your own" even though it will require more initial development time.
