Building a Programming portfolio

So I am progressing through the Python track fairly well, and while I still have a ways to go I am hoping to be able to maybe begin applying for jobs in about 3 months. At least that is my goal for now. I wanted to to ask the question on what specifically I should do to build a portfolio for programming?

I'd recommend you start the TechDegree, that's what helps you build a portfolio. I'm waiting to finish a few track myself so that then I can start that.

Is the tech degree really worth it? I'm not against it completely, and I'm going to wait a little while before I do it but $200 a month is a really hard pill to swallow.

If money is a concern, simply use treehouse to learn and then head over to freecodecamp to work on projects.
