can someone please explain what the span element is? It was not covered in the "how to make a website" course.

<span> and <div> are pretty much the same thing--they're just selectors for picking sections of content. The difference is that <div> is a block-level element, so it will set your content into a new line, while <span> is an in-line element, so it will keep it on the same line as its parent element.
