Can someone PLEASE help me get past this "step"??

Ive been looking through the forums and tried andrews advice about resetting the root password.

After typing in sudo /usr/local/mysql/support-files/mysql.server stop

I get this error message:ERROR! MySQL server PID file could not be found!

It also doesn't let me manually start the server from my system preferences anymore. Ive tried deleting and reinstalling Mysql to no avail! I've also restarted my computer many times(Mac OS X)
