Can you use transition timing function on font-awesome icon?

In this example, Guil uses an img as his icon in the button - I generally place icons in buttons using a font-awesome icon.

i've tried to replicate Guils code using a font awesome icon instead of an image and my code is not working.

Can anyone advise if it is possible to do this using font awesome?

Sure. just give it a class or call the exact element :D
