College IT, needed or not?

I actually intend going into security at a later stage but i want to start with programming and get indepth programming knowledge first I need help and advises on this please Do I need an IT certificate from college or university to secure a high end IT job in the UK?

Keep in mind that IT (Information Technology) and Computer Science are different things. While IT employees focus on the computer systems/network set-up and maintenence in an office, Computer Science deals mostly with programming and creating software. I can't speak for the UK because I don't live there, but I would imagine that most companies would only need to see that you can demonstrate practical skills.
