Colouring text in illustrator

Hey, another illustrator question.

TL;DR When I select text and change its colour the holes inside letters such as o, a, e, q also get filled with the colour. How do I stop this?

I downloaded the black and white moonwalker files, the lesson before we start adding colour. Think I might have missed something, but I've watched the videos again and I'm not sure what's going on. When I use the direct selection tool to select 'Moonwalker' or 'interactive' and then change the colour it fills in the letters and the holes within the letters. eg. a, e, o, p, q all the spacing within the letter gets filled.

I've tried object, outline stroke and then changing the fill but it does the same thing.

Mat Helme sorry to bug you again! Any idea?

Once the text is expanded and then outlined it no longer acts like text. You can't change the font or weight or style the same way as before. I believe you'll need to select the text using your Selection Tool and use the Live Paint Bucket instead.

Hey thanks for such a fast reply. That worked but seemed slightly inefficient as I ended up selecting small sections of the text. If I had a long pieces of text I feel like it might take a while. Really appreciate the answer though
