Android Build a Weather App (2015) Networking Making an HTTP GET Request with OkHttp

Confused about different constructor designs.

We construct the OkHttpClient with the vanilla constructor:

   new OkHttpClient()

Then we construct a Request with a class method called Builder. (Is that a class method? Not sure.)

   new Request.Builder().url(URL).build()

Then we construct a Call with a client object method. 

   client.newCall(request)

I was hoping someone could help me understand the difference and appropriate cases for all three design patterns. I'm also happy to be pointed to a good resource. Thanks!

To clarify - why wasn't the Request constructor designed to just take a URL, like this:

 Request request = new Request(url);
