container.append('item:last-child') Why is this not correct?

const container = document.querySelector('.container');

const item = document.createElement('div');

place the newly created 'div' element inside the container element at the last child position.

Appending a string only adds that string as new text content, it does not attach an element referred to in the string.

The argument should be simply item (without quotes). Anything added using "append" will always be the new last child of the parent it is inserted into by default.
