Convert an old backup folder system into Git

I see my life without git in black-and white. Now with powerful of git I see power and colours. However, I would like to know if I can convert the past into the present somehow..

The problem: let's say I am working on a project which has 30 folders representing 30 versions of it. I would like to know if I can make this project a repository including all of this history, making each folder a commit or a branch..

The first thought was: I could start a repository with the oldest folder, add each new folder as a new branch and then merge the newest folder/branch with the master (oldest folder). Is this possible? or sane? Do you know an easier way?
