Could someone help me with Photoshop?

Hi, So basically, to keep it short, I have a character. Then I have a simple desert sands background. My desert ground is in front of my character, so it looks like my character is behind the background. I masked the character and the scene, and then I take my brush tool to wipe of the background, but when I hide the character, part of my background scene is missing. I'm obviously doing something wrong with the masking technique so could someone help me please? Thanks!

Are the character and the desert background on two different layers? If they are you could just move the character layer above the desert background and you wouldn't need to mask anything.

Do you have the mask on it's own layer? Is it attached to the character or the background? It sounds like an order issue. Feel free to email me for additional help, I think a screenshare would help you best. A work around to end your immediate frustration, duplicate your background layer, pre-mask state, therefore when you hide your character you'll still see the background.
