So i've been a bit rusty on my website design and i'm working my way back into the habit of it i redesigned one of my universities home pages the blue is the original design the sidebar is fixed this is why there is space on the desktops and would like some feedback on it.
The main colors for my uni are red, grey and black which i followed almost like a clients guidelines i hope to get some helpful critique to improve my skills in Design :)

13,116 PointsIs the blue one the previous design? I suggest that in the initial page you write FYM as "First Year Matters" because if someone is a newcomer and lands on a page that says FYM they wouldn't get what that represents. It will also be good to put your school logo and name somewhere in the first page, so that it can show that it is related to that school. Lastly on the 1st column that has FYM and below it the menu..."Home", "Timetables" ..."Contact" There is a huge white-space below that 1st column menu, I suggest you add something there or make that menu horizontal and somewhere on the top.

31,709 PointsI think it looks good, but I do agree with gloria about the logo and FMY. You should put the schools logo and spell out first year masters. I would recommend putting the logo where FYM is at now, and then putting "First Year Masters" beneath it. Personally, I like the vertical side nav and think you should keep it. Also, the red is a little harsh. I see that its in the university's logo, but you might want to see if you can darken it up a little. Great Work!
EDIT: I would also have the black footer extend the width of the page and give it some extra padding on the bottom. The Twitter link and University switch feels a little claustrophobic.
EDIT 2: I would also add some space between the last row ( assesments, teachers, and contact) and the footer. Probably equal to or slightly less than the space between the row above it and the announcements.

31,709 PointsNo problem. I also noticed you said the colors were red, black and grey. You might consider replacing some of the red with grey to bring down the visual intensity. Best of luck.

13,116 PointsAll right. I am talking of the gap in the 2nd design. Below you have the view on a tablet, a monitor and a laptop, that is the one I am talking of (the one shown in the monitor) but overall, do what you think looks best :D
