Design

Design Tools -Mock ups etc

Hi there. Here's my question and why it's my question. Ok so I'm initially a developer web developer to be precise but I program a lot of stuff when I'm not on work like apps and etc. The thing is I have no idea how to go about designing a website/app even icons or image assets well because I just usually put those stuff together because it was already provided. And I have a lot of projects I want to do/build for myself problem is I don't really want to go through that process of finding a designer to make mock ups so I've decided to learn design and create mock ups/image assets etc but I don't know which direction to go to learn what I need to know or what tool is best for this I.E illustraitor, photoshop.

Can some one point me in the right direction and even suggest a track they know might help? I'd love to hear your feedback and how to go about this thanks

Hi Emeka,

I think your best bet would be the Web Design Track.

You mentioned that you are a developer already, so you would probably know everything in the first third of the track (this focuses on HTML, CSS, and even touches a bit on layouts). There is, however, a very good section on Photoshop basics, Illustrator basics, branding, logo design, etc.

Another option, would be to go to the Library and filter the results to show only Design courses/workshops and go at each one individually.

Good Luck. :)

Great thanks I appreciate your help :)

Hi Emeka,

Jason answered your question correctly. What I would add is that design is a very large skill set that can require dedicated study to master. If you are working with clients that have logos, colors, and overall design standards established much of the design work is in place for you. It would still be a great idea to build a relationship with a designer for those times that the project you are working on needs that extra polish.

Good Luck in Your Endeavors,

Don

Thanks, I know design is a large skillset. An I will place a dedicated time into studying it. Thanks for your feedback i appreciate it!

• must know tools for creating assets — Photoshop, Illustrator, Sketch (inexpensive alternative to Photoshop/Illustrator) — however if you want to be a pro designer you should learn all three. • you should understand the difference between vector formats and bitmap formats and when to use which

• Lynda.com has some of the best design tutorials — specifically on how to use certain software like Illustrator, Photoshop, etc. — they have beginner courses that start you at the very top of how to use these programs. It is $25/month but well worth it.

• if you want to make simple prototypes InVision is awesome • another good place to pick up Adobe software skills is Adobe Tv (http://tv.adobe.com/) — i think its free • if you want to ramp up on Sketch Treehouse has some courses on Sketch but also be sure to check out the following: http://www.bohemiancoding.com/sketch/community/ http://sketchtips.tumblr.com/ https://www.designernews.co/stories/17688-sketch-tutorials • learn typography and best practices around it — Treehouse has lots of courses on Typography — IT IS A MUST

Practice, practice, practice.
