Do not understand directories

Hi, so the instructor talked about how treehouse in the workspace is the home directory because of the ~ symbol but he never said what exactly they mean. Can somebody explain it to me

Directories are like storage boxes, and can contain any number of files and/or other boxes (directories).

The "home directory" is a separate personal directory assigned to each user on the system, and is your default location when you first connect to the system. In the workspaces, it will typically be pre-loaded with files (and perhaps other directories) needed for the current exercise.
