Function in setInterval

In the function below, how come you have to precede "this.tick()" with "() =>" ?

componentDidMount() {
    this.intervalID = setInterval( () => this.tick(), 100)
}

That creates an anonymous function. Without seeing the context, I'd guess it might be to control the binding of "this".

But try it this way and see if it works:

componentDidMount() {
    this.intervalID = setInterval(this.tick, 100)
}
