GitHub Cloning Command Problem

I am running on Lion 10.8.2. I am having problems using GitHub in terminal. Whenever I use terminal and try to clone the repository; I end up with an error. I've looked into several solutions into this problem, which were downloading XCode and setting up a .bash_profile. However, these two methods did not happen to work for me. I was wondering if there is another way around this problem.
