Goals for 2018

I just caught the first edition of the Treehouse Show for 2018 and I just wanted to extend that a little bit for the forum and get a discussion going on what your goals are for 2018.

I know that last year I had tremendous plans for Android (and I still do) but until I get a better system to use it with (and a faster Fibre Broadband connection) those plans are on the back burner.

The main thing with me is reigning in my desire to jump in with everything. Because of my Dyspraxia I'm realising that I need to spend more time not just learning but retaining what I learn so I'll have to try to refine my learning strategy around that.

So in recent weeks I've turned my attention back to Front End matters and reviewing PHP.

I want to get a better handle on

  • DOM Scripting with JavaScript
  • jQuery
  • Web Design with PHP
  • Object Oriented PHP
  • File handling and persisting Data with PHP

What do you want to achieve this year?

Hiya,

This year I aim to get a couple of Ruby on Rails applications live and available for purchase. Also, I aim to quality as a pen tester by gaining a certified professional status.

Both are pretty steep learning curves for me!

Oh, and I share your pain re the slow broadband. We've got very slow ADSL here and the current satellite connection has proved sub-optimal. It is a quick connection but the latency causes time-outs. We're investigating a 4G connection which a friend of ours can provide. We can't afford the installation as yet - so that's another goal to aim for!

Steve.

Rather than focus on a particular language/framework, I'm going to concentrate on my workflow and document more on what I'm working on. It could become useful for others, but it's mainly to give myself a resource to remind me how I accomplished a certain task the next time I need it for another project.

More specific aims I have for this year are:

  • I'd like to be more confident using the command line. I'm ok with things like Git, npm and gulp, but get uncomfortable doing anything beyond that.

  • I'd like to do more networking and make new contacts. I'm fortunate to live in a city that is thriving in the industry and hosts regular talks/meetups, but I haven't been taking full advantage of it.

  • In general I'd like to become more confident overall, whether it's confidence in my abilities or conversing with fellow developers or potential new clients.

Hopefully when a new thread comes along for 2019 goals I'll be in a good place!

I work in Leeds from time to time. Nice city.

I want to try and get a Junior front-end developers by the end of the year. I was sitting in the middle of design and front-end. I like design and will do some courses here on it but I think front-end will be more rewarding long term for me. I am now organizing my time so that I can put in around 25 hours a week into this. Maybe more. I don't know how long it will take me. I suppose it depends on how much I struggle working things out on those dark days.

Might have some business for you, then! I can't do front-end stuff to make a site look good - I don't have an artistic bone in my body! But I can build applications and manage the database etc. I create bare bones apps in Rails and lay a design over the top.
