Google PageSpeed Insights

How often do you guys use Google PageSpeed Insights?

Is it the only tool you use for analyzing your website performance or do you use it in tandem with other tools?

Also, how closely do you try and implement the recommendations? Learning about render-blocking and minify has made me more knowledgeable, but I'm wondering if some of the recommendations aren't very feasible and will actually limit your site's functionality.

I will often use Google PageSpeed when auditing a new client's site, or one I have not yet worked on, mostly just to know whether they are using caching and compression. I also usually check personal projects on there.

It does seem that the recommendations are a bit over zealous in terms of how long to cache resources for, and the warnings about render-blocking links and scripts in the html head. When working with something like WordPress, between themes and plugins it is often unrealistic to emulate every suggestion, and depending on the nature of a website, the caching should be custom tailored.

There are also other free tools to use for measuring page speed like pingdom which give a nice break-down of where time is spent downloading resources.
