Have my design skills improved?

I've been a member here for about 3 months and learnt mostly HTML & CSS but lately I have been trying to improve my design skills. I've been watching a few videos here and there about graphic design fundamentals and also looking dribbble designs daily.

The first design was made about 2 months ago in the browser. The second is a mockup I made in Sketch (so I'll need to code it). With the 2nd one I want to make the players name appear when you mouse over the picture. It's by no means a final design because I'm sure I'll get better at this over time and make a few iterations.

Also do you know any books or resources that will help improve my design skills?

p.s The website (2nd one) is about my favourite football that won a league in 2004 and never lost a single game.

Hey Marcus,

I know it's totally subjective, and there might even be someone out there who prefers the "before," however I think you're making amazing progress! This is coming from someone who couldn't design his way out of a paper bag, so take what I say with a grain of salt. But keep it up dude! I think you're doing awesome! Not only does there appear to be a great deal of improvement, but just on its own, your site looks really good to me!

Hi Marcus, I think your doing good advance with the designs, but they have some lack in a few aspects. The basis is good, but try to put more effort on the typography (it helps a lot), try testing some color schemes and about the layout, check some sites on pinterest (I've found good inspiration there). It's just a matter of time before you consolidate the rest of the skills.

Good luck and keep up the good work!

Hi

I'm reading a book called 'The non-designers design book' and have learnt about layout so far and just started the section on color so hopefully I will learn some good tricks from there. Also the next section is typography so I plan on revising the design as I learn more. I currently look at some designs on dribbble for inspiration but I've not spent any time at pinterest so that will be something I will put some time into soon. Thank you for the tips.

Thanks, Marcus

Here's another design I made in Sketch, it's very simple and similar in style to the first one. Looking at my work objectively I've come to the realisation that I need to diversify my style somewhat as they all look very samey.

I've made another design yesterday (2 colour variations), I personally think it's my best yet.
