FunFactsActivity.java

import android.os.Bundle;
import android.view.View;
import android.widget.Button;
import android.widget.TextView;

public class FunFactsActivity extends Activity {

    @Override
    public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
        super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
        setContentView(R.layout.activity_fun_facts);

        // Declare our View variables and assign them the Views from the layout file
        TextView factLabel = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.factTextView);
        Button showFactButton = (Button) findViewById(R.id.factButton);
    }
}

So close!

Button showFactButton = (Button) findViewById(R.id.showFactButton);

It's R.id.showFactButton, not R.id.factButton

I think jcorum has already answered your question. There is one thing I would like to add here:

When using the following code: Button showFactButton = (Button) findViewById(R.id.factButton);

Make sure that you have set the correct id in your xml file.

<Button
    android:layout_width="match_parent"
    android:layout_height="wrap_content"
    android:text="Start your adventure"
    android:id="@+id/factButton"
   />

As you can see on the above xml code, I have set the id of the button to "factButton". Using this your code should work.
