Help! I keep getting this error: "It doesn't look like you're storing the returned value in the `echo` variable."

I keep getting this error "It doesn't look like you're storing the returned value in the echo variable." and am not sure what I'm doing wrong.

function returnValue(thing) {
  return thing;
}

var echo = thing

returnValue("2");

I also tried this and it doesn't work.
