The e.target is the button element, so you can call the previousElementSibling on that in order to get that "p" element

list.addEventListener('click', function(e){
  if (e.target.tagName == 'BUTTON') {
    var button = e.target;
    var pElem = button.previousElementSibling;

    pElem.className = "highlight";
  }
});
