Hosting and Server Side of a Businesses

I want to start a web/app development business but I want to host all of my information. What is a good server to purchase, when starting off, and what are some of the basic necessities and tools I will need to have and know?

Some projects:

  • Social Network
  • Blogs
  • Web development
  • E-commerce

The easiest way is to just to use shared hosting, pick one that supports Ruby on Rails and gives you SSH access and you should probably be able to do most of what you are talking about. You will only need re-seller hosting if your clients will have their own hosting control panel account.

My recommendation is to use A Small Orange.

Here are some other good choices as well:

In order of recommendation

  • A Small Orange
    • Small company, good prices, great support
  • Media Temple
    • Lots of big names host their sites with them
  • Liquid Web
    • Medium company, great support for dedicated servers
  • Linode
    • VPS hosting & Treehouse partnership

I'd recommend against either hostgator or dreamhost, I've heard too many horror stories about their support.

Just search for reseller hosting on Google. There's lots of companies who will sell you hosting services for you to sell on under your own brand.
