How did TeamTreehouse create the WorkSpaces component of the website?

I'm looking to create an application that allows users to input some code, and the output can be seen on the same screen. Functionally it is the same as codepen.io and/or the teamtreehouse workspaces app. What is the conceptual idea of creating a way for user input (code) to be collected, compiled, and displayed?
