You need to pass the array $letters to the function count() an example:

<?php
$letters = array(
                 "A",
                 "C",
                 "M",
                 "E"
                );
$letter_count = count($letters);
echo $letter_count;
?>

More information on this PHP function can be found here: http://php.net/manual/en/function.count.php
