How do you customize the page edit screen in Wordpress

I'd like to know where to look for adding new options to the edit page/post screen. Im referring to the screen where you add images pick which page template you want and disable/enable comments. Is there a hook I need to use or a file I need to edit or something else entirely? Thanks!
