How to alter a column in the table without data loss (Postgres) ?

Hey. I use Postgres. I have a python script that initialized the model (database). I have already got some data entries there but I want to change length of one column. How should I approach any changes for the existing databases which already contains data? Can I just run a query in Postgrers? And what should I do with a python script?

In case your column is of the type varchar, there's a guide on how to change it's length over here.
