*{margin-left: 5px;}
would add a left margin to EVERY element on the page. It's also implied in the rest of your selectors. So when, for example, using a class selector, the browser recognizes you're asking for EVERY element of that class to be affected. So
*.class{attribute:value;} = .class{attribute:value;}
