How to make different number of posts show on pages?

I want only one post to show on a homepage but five posts to show on archive pages. I've tried various methods, including adding this to my functions file:

function limit_posts_per_page() { if ( is_archive() ) return 5; else return 1; } add_filter ('pre_option_posts_per_page', 'limit_posts_per_page');

but nothing has worked. Any help? Thanks!
