I have no question except, "Why does the compiler not accept my code?"

In your method getTileCount() need to accepts a char then the for loop (for (char tile: mHand.indexOf(tile) >= 0) {) i think is invalid, try this code

public int getTileCount(char tile) { // accepts a char
    int count = 0;
    for (char tile1: mHand.toCharArray()) { // for loop
      if(tile1 == tile){
        count += 1;
      }
    }
    return count;
  }

Thanks for the help. I did not realize that the first declaration inside the 'for each' parenthesis is nothing more than a labeling of the items following the colon. That enables further working inside the curly braces, such as the test for equality that you are showing me in your code. I see now. Thanks.

There is no counter in this method. It is really just a flag of a Boolean type. It can be either zero or one, but will not add up because only one char can be passed in, and count is initialized to zero every time.
