I'm not understanding how to store the string

How do I store a string of characters .I feel like I'm missing something basic, but it's just not clicking today

function returnValue(width){
  var widthNumber= width;
  return widthNumber;
  var echo= width
}

returnValue('My arguement');

you should never put something after the " return " key ! and you re not obliged to declare a variable within your function, they asked you to just return the argument itself !

function returnValue(width){

  return width;
}

var echo = returnValue('My arguement');
