I'm pretty sure my syntax is correct. What am I doing wrong?

The verbiage of this question is confusing me.

function returnValue(temperature) {
  var echo = temperature;
  return echo;
}
returnValue('68');

function returnValue(thingy) { //create the function that accepts a single variable
  var to_print = thingy;  // attach that variable defined in the line above to a variable INSIDE the function
  return to_print; // RETURN the variable (that has the variable passed to the function)
}

var echo = returnValue('yourstring');  //create a variable that calls the function with a string.

it is kind of weird in the wording, but the part your missing is the:

var echo = returnValue('yourstring');
