Is it a good idea to become better at drawing for a designer?

I am a terrible drawer, it's just not something I have ever really been great at or really spent much time doing. I see on the illustrator course a lot of what is made is about first being able to draw the item as a sketch and then importing it to use in illustrator to make the spaceman vector, rather than creating it from scratch in illustrator.

I also see in the logo design lessons that sketch the design first is a good idea.

Short answer is yes it is a good idea, but first you need to understand there's more to drawing than just drawing. Drawing is a medium, Understanding form, perspective, light, color, shade, line weight to name a few are really what would help improve your artistic skills in all mediums including graphic and illustrative design.

If your asking if it's necessary than no it's not, its not necessary to learn barbering to be good at cuting someone's hair but it helps.

I am a designer myself and to able to draw is very important for me. It would allow you to transfer idea faster from inside your head to the surface. But you don't have to be a really good drawer, just that people will understand what you draw.

It only takes practice and more practice.
