Try using GoogleApiAvailability class, like this:

public boolean isGooglePlayServicesAvailable(Activity activity) {
        GoogleApiAvailability googleApiAvailability = GoogleApiAvailability.getInstance();
        int status = googleApiAvailability.isGooglePlayServicesAvailable(activity);
        if (status == ConnectionResult.SUCCESS)
            return true;
        else
            return false;
    }
