It's International Non-Binary People's Day!

Happy International Non-Binary People's Day ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿค๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ–ค

Since 2012, July 14th marks a day of visibility for Non-Binary individuals! New research has found that 1 in 4 LGBTQ youth identifies as non-binary or genderqueer .

What does it mean for an individual to be "Non-Binary"?

Non-binary is a term for individuals who might consider themselves to be "gender-queer" or "gender non-conforming". Typically, non-binary folks don't identify as either male or female or align themselves on the typical gender binary of Male or Female. The term "gender" is being used here as a separate word from the "sex" of an individual. Gender is not synonymous with sex. To learn more about gender, we highly recommend reading this free ebook called The Gender Book: https://thegenderbook.com/

Remember:

  • Not all non-binary people go by they/them pronouns.
  • Not all non-binary people express themselves as androgynous.
  • There is no "wrong" way to be non-binary.

How can I be an ally and support non-binary people?

Use proper pronouns and names. If a person has their pronouns displayed, be mindful of using the correct pronouns. If you mess up, it's okay... it happens. Simply correct it and move forward. Be considerate of others and what might cause them gender dysphoria. Be mindful of using gendered terms like guys and ladies. Try not to assume a person's gender by appearance alone. We all know what happens when we assume things... so let's all do better. Do your research. I hear many people say things about they/them pronouns that are not quite accurate, especially pertaining to the grammar. There are plenty of sources out there proving that to be false. Learn about gender and try to be mindful of cis privilege.
