Just finished the first part of the PHP Build a simple application course.
I gave the instruction videos on MAMP and XAMP a look just to see if there's anything I need to know.
A while back I used a system called WAMP to host files on local server. But nowadays i have a web host I can keep PHP files on. Do I need XAMP? What;s the advantage?
Thanks. :)

So yes, I think it is necessary. It still use putty for quick edits but not for development.

4,142 PointsHi Jonathan!
Basically no, you don't need XAMPP. Your host server and your computer+XAMPP do the "same" work.
To be clear, WAMP, MAMP and XAMPP are software built for the same purpose (wich you mentioned), host files on your local machine, and be able to develop your php app locally.
I don't know the specific differences between WAMP and XAMPP (both for windows), but they do the same work. IMO you can pick whatever suits your fancy for local development.
Hope this helps! :)
