General Discussion

Just started here at Team Treehouse and very frustrated.

Hello, I just started the Pro course option and feel very alone, lol! I started the front end web development track and received my first badge. It's been all downhill after that! I'm working in HTML and I'm having trouble with the text editor that is next to the videos I'm watching by Nick. He did say in the first video that current text editor might look different then what he is using and it does. I have no tabs at the top like he does in the videos. So, when I go to check my work… Sorry, I don't have all the Coding lingo down yet...View my HTML to see if it working properly, the editor changes and allows me to see that what I've done is correct, but when I try to go back, I lose everything!! I'm working on a new iMac and I just don't understand what is happening? I put five hours yesterday and Lost it all. So, I then decided to just type in the HTML from the lesson a second time. I saved my work thankfully because I can't seem to back out of the Text editor window for lack of better words. Also, I finish 85% I'll first lesson and answered all the questions correctly, but then I ran into the code challenge? It seems a bit early for a code challenge? I'm just trying to understand what they are asking of me and the direction say to keep building upon the previous code? Sorry if I sound like a wimp, but it's very frustrating when I'm sitting alone in my home and I have no one to ask for help. I was told the community it is very helpful, so I will give this a try. If I to wait hours or days for a response, then that would defeat the purpose of sitting down to work for a planned four hour work session on becoming a web designer. I try tech support yesterday and found that people that work in that section to be very nice, but they just take care of billing. Anyway, I only have a few days in my free trial to decide if I'm going to go elsewhere. Again, I didn't sign up for the pro membership. I don't want to waste $49 per month if I can't get help when needed. Thank you all for listening. I hope I get some feedback. Thank you again.

Like I said in the previous discussion just give me a tag in any questions you might have along the way the front end course. I did my first coding classes in college online and had to teach myself from a book with no help along the way, if I could change it I would do treehouse. This community is awesome and growing just look at the success stories. Coding is a lot of learning and never stopping. Don't give up hope after 4 days. Just give me a tag and I'll try to help in the fastest manner I can

Hi Dalton, I thank you for reaching out to help me, but please understand that I'm clueless as to what you're saying when you say "just give me a tag"? I know I'm working with tags in HTML... Do you use the Treehouse text editor? Mark, said I might want to try another one. So, I'm just trying to follow what I'm being told in the videos at this point. I'm not ready to experiment with only a few days under my belt! LOL! Thanks again!

Do you use a Mac?

I meant a tag on the post's to the community for help with the @ sign! I use workspaces on my work computer so I don't have to download anything on the computer. At home I use the sublime text editor because it color codes everything and has a lot of auto complete features but that costs some coin, for a start I definitely recommend Notepad+, that is what I used for a long time. I do not use a mac, not for lack of trying though I have a tank of a gaming computer that I code while I watch the baseball/hockey games on in unison. I would definitely try and use Notepad + for the color coding or try the free trial at sublime and see how you like it.

Hi Tim,

Lets start with the first thing of what text editor are you using (Is it the one for treehouse in the browser)? It maybe worth just messing around with it for an hour or two or finding one you like. I personally, do not like the browser based one and prefer to use my own choice of text editor.

Generally, the community here is very helpful. A few pointers towards that. Explaining the issue/problem as best you can goes a long way in getting a response. So the more information the better, screenshots, code examples etc go miles to get help as it makes it easier to help you without having to play guess that possible problem.

The code challenges are their to help reinforce points in the lesson and generally aren't to difficult though there are times where it wants something done a specific way and generally there are more than one way to do something.

Best of luck, Mark

Thank you, Mark. Yes, I'm using the text editor that is next to the videos I'm watching here on Treehouse. I didn't know I had an option to use another one or how I would show my work if using another one? Would I just copy & paste it in? I'm just doing what I'm told in the videos. This is all new to me, so should I try the one that comes with my Mac? Also, I would love to show screen shots of the problems I'm having, but I didn't even know I could do this or how on this forum. Are there instructions that I'm missing on how to do this Community forum? I thank you for your advice!

Personally, I do not like the browser based one.

Here are a few free ones.

https://atom.io/

https://code.visualstudio.com/

http://brackets.io/

I personally would go with one of those. All three work on macs as well. These give some more advanced options but will make life a bit easier. Code highlighting is a huge one, auto completion (helps avoid typos) being new to coding I would just type it out but still use it to help you know what it was. This list goes on.

As far as work goes you would have to copy and paste it and it is a minor extra step but I think it would help with some of the frustration you have. The bonus of using a local app vs browser based is you can save everything locally and it doesn't matter if the internet dies, a lag spike, a server error on Treehouses end etc. Once you get a little more use to it. You can just run everything locally as well then upload what you need to treehouse for credit.

As well, there are lots of tutorials out there on them or guides to kind of help step them up though most of them it is just open a directory and it is good to go at least right out of the box.

As far as showing screenshots you would have to use a third part to do that and link here but most of the time you will just need to share code. I also don't mind and have helped in the past with issues with screensharing or skype.

Thank you very much, Mark. I'm thinking of canceling and taking a local class. I'll make up my mind over the weekend. If I do go, I might be back after I get some experience. Thank you again for your kindness. Take care!

I'll give my support for using atom. Best one IMO.
