Make sure you throw the exception before changing the mBarsCount field.

I keep getting an error telling me to throw the exception before changing the mBarsCount field. Im sure Im doing that. What have I done wrong?

GoKart.java
public class GoKart {
  public static final int MAX_BARS = 8;
  private String mColor;
  private int mBarsCount;

  public GoKart(String color) {
    mColor = color;
    mBarsCount = 0;
  }

  public String getColor() {
    return mColor;
  }

  public void drive() {
    drive(1);
  }

  public void drive(int laps) {
    // Other driving code omitted for clarity purposes
    int enoughCharge = mBarsCount -= laps;
    if (enoughCharge < 0) {
      throw new IllegalArgumentException("Not enough battery remains");
    }
    mBarsCount = enoughCharge;
  }

  public void charge() {
    while (!isFullyCharged()) {
      mBarsCount++;
    }
  }

  public boolean isBatteryEmpty() {
    return mBarsCount == 0;
  }

  public boolean isFullyCharged() {
    return mBarsCount == MAX_BARS;
  }

}

You have one minor syntax issue with your code. Why are you using an assignment operator on mBarsCount when you are initializing your enoughCharge variable? That is what is giving you the error message.

Happy coding,

Ken

You're getting that message because the challenge doesn't need a new variable, it wants you to throw the IllegalArgumentException. So instead of int enoughCharge = mBarsCount -= laps; mBarsCount = enoughCharge;, try

if(laps > mBarsCount) {
      throw new IllegalArgumentException("Not enough battery remains");
    }
    mBarsCount -= laps;
