So, a markup language lets you control how your information is presented on the page. It is a group of characters or symbols that the browser will interpret in a special way. For instance, if you put text inside of <p></p> tags, the browser knows you want to skip a line after that text. If you were put text inside <h1></h1> tags <h1>sometext</h1>, that text will be displayed as larger than normal by the browser. Markup languages give you control over how your data gets displayed.
