Max file size images for portfolio website?

I am creating a portfolio website for the company. Recently I read about responsive images and I'm experimenting a bit with the techniques.

Now I wonder what should be the max file size for the images? I am displaying them the full width of my container (1170px). It would be nice if they still look good on retina screens, but then the file size gets really large and I fear it will take too long to load them. Should I rather make them 1.5x?

I have the same question for the thumbnail gallery of the portfolio. The images are smaller there, but there will be quite many. Should I go for 1.5x instead of 2x again?

I am looking forward to your help and opinions!

i think that you need to compress the images without lost quality , you can do this usig tools like tinyjpg
